Over at the Los Angeles Times, Steven Zeitchik brings news that Sony is beginning to shop for directors for its upcoming film adaption of UNCHARTED: Drake’s Fortune. The one director who seems to be targeted is David O. Russell, who directed 1999’s Three Kings with George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Ice Cube, and the upcoming Christian Bale/Mark Wahlberg film The Fighter.
Zeitchik stresses that these meetings are just preliminary and are not in the final stages, so we wouldn’t be surprised if a few more names pop up in the trades in the near future. It’s also noted that Sony may have tried to slate the film for a Summer 2011 release to fill a scheduling hole, but that target may shift as development continues.
With the film’s screenwriters already at work since Fall of 2009, it seems like traction is starting to pick up for what is sure to be one of the gaming industries strongest video game adaptations, considering the cinematic-rich source material behind it.
What do you think about the potential director selection? Should Sony look for a more-prominent director or keep it fresh? Let us know in the comments!
