Nathan Drake
So far we have not yet seen Nathan, or indeed any of his chums in relation to the newly announced installment to the Uncharted series. However, as we said in our post looking at the theories about the voice in the trailer we think this will be a game about the characters that we already know, with a few exceptions. So; Nathan Drake. This is pretty much a given, I think. Uncharted is his gig. While he is certainly not the only person doing what he does, he is still a unique and interesting character. Remove him from the equation and you lose a lot of what makes Uncharted Uncharted. The mechanics of the series so far are built around his skills; he shoots, he climbs and he puzzles. Obviously mechanics can be changed, but if Naughty Dog are developing a game with a different character, with different mechanics, and potentially set in a different era, they are not developing an Uncharted. And as yet that is one of the few tings we know about this for definite.
On a more mercenary note; Nathan was one of the leading poster boys of the last generation so can you imagine a meeting in which Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra tell Sony “sure we’ll make a new Uncharted, if we have to, but we are going to leave the main guy out”?
Victor Sullivan
Also highly likely. We know from Uncharted 3; Drake’s Deception what they mean to each other, and I don’t ever really see that changing. I believe the times we have seen them together are the times that Nathan has most been himself. They don’t always work together, but they are always on the side of the other. It is possible that we see Sully take a bit of a backward step, especially if this one takes place after Uncharted 3; Drake’s Deception. One of the themes of that story was Sully’s advancing age and Nate’s inability to consider the consequences. He probably won’t fully retire until he drops dead, though.
Elena Fisher
I really hope she and Nathan have finally put their issues to bed and they can just go on with their lives. Obviously one or other or both will have to do a certain amount of compromising first, and who gives more is anyone’s guess. A lot of people have been suggesting that Elena and Nate should be either expecting a child or have one already. This may be a way forward for their relationship, although how Nate would react and adjust to fatherhood I don’t know. He hasn’t exactly had much training in that department. Honestly I don’t even know if I could see Elena with a child. She is very focused and driven and perhaps motherhood was never in her lifeplan.
Chloe Fraser
She got her big moment in Uncharted 2; Among Thieves as Nathan’s other woman (although thankfully there was significantly more to her than that). Ultimately she was left in favour of Elena, but they remained friends. Up she popped in Uncharted 3; Drake’s Deception and many people felt she was ‘under-used’. Narratively she played her part (as ‘the best getaway driver in the business’ and as a partner to newcomer Charlie Cutter), but many wanted more. I wonder whether she will be seen again; she is a fan favourite, but assuming both Elena and Sully make an appearance, we are already starting to bulge… Unless the story really calls for her; I don’t really see her inclusion a safe bet.
Charlie Cutter
Introduced in Uncharted 3; Drake’s Decpetion, Charlie wasn’t around for long. His input was wrapped up after breaking his leg at about a third of the way through the story. However, despite this short screen time he managed to leave a massive impression on me and I would love to see him back. In a way he occupies the same space as Chloe; a peripheral character whose input might not be a requirement. Given that Graham McTavish once tweeted that he would keep Uncharted fans posted about any future involvement; I suspect we may see him back. On the other hand he did also play Zoran Lazarevic in Uncharted 2, so if McTavish is coming back it may not be as Charlie Cutter. (I am not expecting Lazarevic back, by the way.)
Tenzin
As much as I love Tenzin I find it hard to believe we will see him back again. He was not an adventurer in the same way that Nate is, and he has a life in the village with is daughter.
Eddy Raja
Dammit the guy is DEAD!
Harry Flynn
Ditto. Thank goodness.
Rika Raja
Rika was introduced to us via the motion comic The Eye of Indra, and was made into a multiplayer skin. Her parting words to Nathan as she sailed off with the treasure he’d endured torture to claim were that she looked forward to being found by him. Another fan favourite; I wonder if she might be making an oft requested reappearance. Now would be a good time, given her piratical relations.
Marissa Chase
Marissa was the leading lady of Uncharted; Golden Abyss and we have not heard of her again. I enjoyed Golden Abyss, but one of the things that annoyed me was that we were given this character (who leapt into bed with Nathan Drake) but disappeared. I would like to see her bought back into the narrative to make the whole thing more cohesive. She feels like a lose end. Or at least a ‘yeah we don’t talk anymore because she didn’t like the breakfast I made for her’ comment might do the trick.
A new character
Todd Stashwick is The Voice of the trailer man, and still we do not know who he is playing. I’ve given this quite a lot of thought already so I don’t feel that I need to do more. One thing that I would like to see is a new, otherwise unattached woman on the side of the goodies who does not end up bumping uglies with Nate. It is time for that to be subverted. Yes, I think Nate is hot. But not every woman will want to sleep with him.
And on that note… I’ll be keeping you all posted.
